Do other ISPs serve you up their DNS like this?

Yes, almost without exception. You can override it if you really feel
the need, but it's generally not a great idea to do so. The settings
sent by your ISP are really just advice to your computer "these will
work, so you should probably use them." It should be possible to tell
your computer to ignore the ISP provided settings and use a different
DNS instead.

That said, I'm using WestNet's DNS as well, and not seeing any issues,
though I'm admittedly not currently at an OS/X box.

Hi Nancy,
If you go to <http://www.westnet.com.au/support/setup/>
you will find that for West Aust the westnet DNS is shown as 202.72.191.162

the same number as shown in your info below.

There seems to be a general census ( at Macintouch.com ) that when you insert the numbers into your preferences the troubles with Safari go away.. There is a suggestion that it may be a timing issue when the ISP has to find the DNS numbers.

Try it and see how you go !

Bob

I have always configured with the numbers in and have no troubles so far.

OK, then if, as Craig says, ISPs almost without exception specify DNSs then is it fair to reason that the reported fix of entering the DNS is working because a significant number of ISPs do *not* specify their DNS? Are these ISPs 'cheating' and riding on other providers' infrastructure perhaps? I note that in the maxfixit thread, a couple of users found no joy from specifying their providers' DNSs.

BTW these questions aren't because I am having any noticeable difficulty with my own installation (except for wanting to work out the configuration most likely to get me success with scheduled recordings) - I am just a stickybeak :-) Feel free to ignore me if you are busy with real stuff ;-)
