Probably not. It's more likely that there's a software problem on the
affected macs that causes them not to properly pick up the DNS
information supplied by the ISPs. Maybe manually entering the DNS server
information works around the problem. This is just guesswork, as I
haven't read up on the issue, but seems a reasonable explanation for why
a fix like that would work.

It's not very likely that they're doing that, no. In your case, the two
IP addreses you get for DNS servers in your log resolve to
dns1.westnet.com.au and relay1.westnet.com.au respectively. Both are
within WestNet's normal IP address space.

It might be worth specifying them explicitly in your settings anyway -
just in case. For testing purposes, you might also want to try iiNet's
DNS - 203.0.178.191 - but I don't know if you're allowed to use that for
your regular DNS if you're not with iiNet.
