Updates do nothing more than patch leaks, and post-install proceedures
take longer than the install itself!
When I tell a newbie they *need* a firewall and antvirus and spy/adware
scrubbers and all need to be kept current, I can readily see the sheen
go off the new-toy experience for them.
All that before they've even sent an email to their friends telling them
they are online now :(

BTW the majority of the software titles for only windoze are either
clones of each other or not worth the fuss, these days OSX feels well
populated by comparison.
