Does anyone know how I can resolve this so that people with Windows machines can play the movies? Is there, somewhere in the microsoft operating system, a preference that could be activated to allow them to play QuickTime items?
Your PC using friend will need to install QuickTime for Windows to play QuickTime movies. I don't know if you're allowed to bundle a copy with your CD-ROM - download a copy from Apple and read the license to find out.
An alternative may be to provide the movies in MPEG-4 or WMV '.avi' format, or in MPEG-2 '.mpg'/'.mpeg' format, which Windows Media Player can handle. Video experts on WAMUG will no doubt be able to tell you what, if any, tools you can use to convert your video to these formats and what quality loss / size increase you may suffer.
