once you are booted from the installer CD go to the menu at the top of
the screen under installer and choose reset passwords. This will present
you with a list of the accounts on the machine that you can reset the
passwords for. if your old account isn't there then choose the root one.
You will be able to create new accounts from the root one. Once when my
admin account vanished from the list (but all my personal folders were
still there) I logged in as root, made a user with the same name and it
all just came back together.
