Hello all -- -- Thanks for the useful advice as below. Unfortunately nothing worked. Both MacRAR and MacUnRAR said 'file header broken', latest (Classic) version of Stuffit Expander found 'Broken Header' in file. MacRAR made a sort of pseudo-folder which showed the names and sizes of 4 JPG files the archive contained, but these weren't real files which could be found or worked on.
-- Unless anyone has any more ideas, I'd better get back to the sender of the original files and ask him to re-send the files in another format.
