Hi Wamuggers
I've offered to help a teacher by setting up 2 older PPC 580s to run
some CDROM based ed software. The computers run quite nicely on OS
7.6.1 however the CDROMs require OS 8 or 9. The CDROMs won't boot on
the machine, throwing up an error -192 and/or message similar to "Mac
Start failed to load".
I've found a great error code resource at
http://www.rustle.com/mac/system8.html#aec.targ which says" -192
resNotFound Resource not found". (I gave my Sad Macs, Bombs and Other
Disasters Book to my daughter, thinking I wouldn't be needing it now
I've got OS X!)
Presumably, correct me if I'm wrong, Mac Start is looking for some form
of system software from OS 8 that is not in OS 7. I've got an OS 8.1
disk which I could load onto the 580s but there is not enough hard
drive space on them to do so. I'm loath to delete the ed software on
them to make room for unnecessary system stuff and certainly don't want
to upgrade any hardware. Is there a workaround? Is it possible to
install the components of OS 8 needed to run the CDROMs without totally
updating to 8.1? If so, what would I need to install? It would be nice
for the kids to have these extra learning resources in their classroom
at NO cost.
I've looked at the picle's website http://macfaq.org/ which I've used
before to do a similar trick with OS 7.1 - 7.5 on LC475s but can't find
anything to help. Lowendmac http://www.lowendmac.com/ also doesn't seem
to have any info.
Old Macs never die. They just get braver.
Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Regards
Reg
