So who's game to try it, once tigger bounces in?
Have had it installed for a while, since the beta. But really
unless you're writing your own software to use it for your own
computations it's not particularly useful, and installation is
obviously a bit difficult as you've got to enter all the settings
on each machine etc, and e-mail some guy at Stanford. I suspect
XGrid is designed more for a local cluster of tightly integrated
machines rather than an internet spanning collaborative effort.
Shake utilises Xgrid as do other 3d Rendering programs , and DVDSP in
the upcoming version has links to it for encoding, which I would
assume is reason why Apple have decided to incorporate it in this
release of OS X.
The Xgrid Developers have been running with many variants of multiple
servers recently from within Unix / Linux distributions, so the
closed shop mentality is being removed slowly.
But, it's original model was to enable scientists to run distributed
computations using simple Mac OS X applications. As with all things
in life they get expanded, so has Apples ideals for this program. It
is an interesting journey as a digital content provider over the next
few years with HD and Interactivity becoming the norm, and other
issues already straining dual processor boxes. This path Apple are
building could be one answer as was Firewire and DV all those years ago.
Otherwise you're better off running boinc, which can devote your
processor time to multiple causes of your choosing...

Very Interesting, must have look into this, thanks Shay.
Have fun,
