I haven't personally seen this one, but it reeks of Preferences
problems. Try deleting com.apple.Safari.plist from
~/Library/Preferences (i,e,, the Preferences folder inside your Home
Folder), re-launch Safari and see if the problem is still there. Can't
offer much more help than this unfortunately, apart from advising you
to peruse the resources of the likes of MacInTouch and MacFixit.
Thanks for the help but it turned out that I'd not selected 'Enable
Tabbed Browsing' under the Tab Preferences.
