I am still trying to nut out this anomaly that I have with my dual 800 G4 10.3.9 seeming to set up a network I have not made.

If I start up my computer, connect to my broadband2 account via pppoe, then open Eudora and check my mail, I can reliably then go to my main hard drive and find that the grey sphere named Network in the sidebar has an eject symbol next to it. Clicking eject does nothing.

Double clicking the grey sphere brings up a new window with an alias to 'Servers', which when clicked brings up an alias to '(my computer name)-Computer.local', which when clicked opens my main hard drive.

If I start up the computer and do all of the above, but double click the main hard drive first, at any stage up to checking mail, the Network does not mount.

The computer seems to move much slower when the network is mounted - this is how I first discovered it was happening.

I've got the firewall on, got Brickhouse, and tried Snitch for a while (nothing unusual). I've run Virex (clean), run diskwarrior (this does usually report a small problem with two files, which is fixed). I've upgraded from 10.3.8 to 10.3.9 to see if that helped. I've reset the pram. I've asked for help on the Apple discussions site. I'm out of ideas.

One more thing, might not be relevant. I don't sleep the computer, and often when I return from a time away the computer is very very sluggish. Several minutes to open an application rather than the normal instant response. The only fix seems to be a restart.

If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful to hear them.

I'd also be grateful if someone out there with a similar configuration to me tried the method above to see if it mounts a network for them, or if its only my computer. This has been happening for a long time, and did also happen in 10.3.8 and on a 500k adsl connection.

cheers
