Hi Brian, I cannot see where a good UPS would present any danger to your usage. The advantage of such devices is to provide you with clean main voltage, ie with damaging spikes filtered out and a constant voltage to your power supply. The other advantage is to provide you with enough power to properly close your computer in case of a mains power black-out or outage. However this second advantage is probably of no use when using a lap-top as your internal battery would provide you with the necessary back-up power. I have used such a device ever since I purchased my Performa 5400 and the newer G5 without any problems. In fact this has saved me a few times when the mains blacked-out whilst working on the computer. I do not know anything about the ethernet filter unfortunately, hence cannot comment.
