They were free for life. The life of the mac.com product.
Apple didn't make you start paying for mac.com, they killed the
product. Coincidentally they released a new paid-for product called
"dot Mac". It's the same as that lifetime warranty that washing
machines come with. They are under warranty for the life of the
machine. When the machine dies, the warranty expires.
