Andrew,
due to the cost of the isight i have been using a
digital video camera conected via firewire, only
problem ive encountered with this is the camera goes
into standby mode.
It appears only a true firewire web cam will work with
iChat, if anyone can correct me on this please do.
an article was done by macworld.com that is worth a
read and lists a few options of which i havent been
able to source in perth at this stage.

At around $220 I can see that it's a touch more than a $100~$170 USB2
web cams but owning one of those USB2 web cams I think the iSight
rocks all over it.
already I've been chasing the pets and my nephews and nieces around
with it hanging off my iBook making little movies with it and
getting a kick out of them looking at the results (yes even the dogs
seem to think its fun to watch them selfs "in the movies").

That said I can't get it too work under Tiger but used to work
under Panther... also didn't support all the USB cameras I tired -
about 2 in 3 worked fine.
