I would recommend going at least 768MB (built in 256+ 500MB extra) if
not more. The RAM prices are quite reasonable.
Anyway it all depends on your usage.
Opening one or two office productivity type application and you might
not notice it much.
Opening a couple of multi media applications then trying to do your
e-mail and some web browsing you'll find the G4 will "out perform"
the G3 significantly.
Performance wise I have a 500Mhz G3 iBook and the new 1.33Ghz iBook
(and a 1Ghz PowerBook) and in comparison -
day to day stuff like web browsing and e-mail and office you might
struggle to notice much difference unless you get in to multimedia
rich web pages or try to run to much at once (this I put down to
slower bus and memory speed as much as processor speed on the G3)
then the G3 really struggles.
Spotlight (and it's associated back ground processes) really bring
the G3 almost to a complete holt at times. Where as the G4 Books
might hickup a few seconds.
Ripping MP3's in iTunes, Photoshop, iMovie, GarageBand, iPhotos the
G4's cream the G3 usually by several times over.
E.g.
MP3's ripped from AIFF files (so not CD drive speed) are done in a
third to a quarter of the time on the G4 Books over the G3 Book.
I can't even be bothered to open iMovie or GarageBand on the G3 as
it's like watching paint dry compared to the G4 Books.
iPhoto is well within acceptable and usable but not any were as zippy
navigating around a large collection/album.
Photoshop on the G3 is OK for smaller jobs (I can't belive I'm saying
that - I first used Photoshop on an LCII way back when and it used to
take several hours to apply a Gaussian blur to a 1 MB image)
Bryce raytracing (which don't use the Altivac on the G4) are usually
4+ times faster on the G4 Books
Hi all,
Can anyone give me a subjective (or objective for that matter)
opinion on the sort of performance boost I'd get from going from an
800MHz G3 iBook to a 1.33GHz G4? There's 500MB RAM in the old one,
and I'd probably do the same in the new one.
Thanks,
Andrew.
