Thanks for your suggestions
I have tried:
- trashing all of the MS office preferences in OS9.
- rebuilding the OS9 Desktop.
- disabling startup items in the OS9 Extensions manager.
- repairing permissions.
- obtained all of the OS updates from the Apple site.
These problems have me quite frustrated.

Office 98 does everything I need it to do and I know all of its
quirks and capabilities. Having to upgrade to 2004 just seems to
be an unnecessary expense, and one which I can't particularly
afford at the moment.
I tried Pages for the free 30 day trial period and was quite
disappointed with it. Parts of it are quite good, however In some
aspects it is backwards of the AppleWorks I used some 7 years
ago. In my view it will need an awful lot of improvement to
become an Office competitor.
I have done as suggested and downloaded NeoOffice and will try it.
Ideally though I would like to get Office 98 working properly again.
So did you get my suggestion about the Excel preferences .
Perhaps in the Instal of Tiger the Classic setup has been distorted ?
