Dear WAMUG'ers, Again, many thanks to all who gave me suggestions. I have tried most of those and finally someone lent me a SanDisk ImageMate reader ($49), and this reader mounted the 512MB SD (SanDisk) card immediately. I was able to download the photos and delete them from the disk.
So it looks like somehow the 'Transcend' reader was having problem in reading the 512MB card. Although it has read Sony's chewing-gum Stick, and smaller sized SD cards - 128MB, 32MB without any problems, maybe it was not able to read the larger SD cards. The Transcend card would have been the first or among the 1st generation of USB2 card reader, so maybe the technology has since improved beyond its capabilities. Anyway, problem solved. Just thought you may wish to know the outcome.
