As far as I'm concerned, the situation is extremely muddy. Frankly, I have come to the conclusion that MacOS X's own routines are as good as anything on the 3rd party market. For example, I recently had the experience of having to repair a client's hard drive (which the computer could no longer see). MY first choice was Disk Warrior. DW saw the drive and claimed to have repaired it, but hadn't really. In the end, the only thing which worked was the disk repair function in Disk Utility.
To my knowledge, the drive is still working perfectly. I must say regarding Disk Warrior and Mac OS X, I have seen many more instances of failure (ie, effecting no improvement) than success. While it has never created more damage than was there to start with, it often fails to fix problems. Disk Utility will be my first line of defence from now on.
