Lost mail

In renaming/reorganising mailboxes I have made a bundle of mails  
invisible.  I can not see them in the box where I believe they are  
but can "find" them with a search on a keyword.  Having done this I  
can select them all to transfer to a newly created mailbox but Mail  
gives an error "can not transfer".
Help please!!!  Double help in fact, it is an important chunk of my  
wife's mail!
