And don't forget to back up your mailboxes before doing major reorganisations. You can also back up your mailboxes *right now* before rebuilding. I don't think rebuliding the indices can possibly make anything worse, but you never know, do you? (Fortunately, for someone like myself, it's all accessible via the command line so I don't usually worry the shape of my mailboxes. I also make backups, which I've fortunately never needed in Mac OS X days).
