Imovie only imports video from video cameras, not digital cameras,
which makes sense to me.
Correct, and it does make sense.

Remember that once the movie clips are imported into iPhoto they
become available in iMovie just like your photos.
Bring them to the time line and your away editing them in iMovie.
Quality varies depending on the source.
If the iMovie will only contain clips from the digital camera
experiment with the various video formats available in iMovie 5/6.
