James,

I would suggest not running two interfaces at the same
time for what your trying to do if you can avoid it.

The reason is that someone is blocking the ports that
your using on the lan for a reason.  I'm guessing do
to your email address that your at a university and
they are limiting the ports your can use and what can
affect you.  

If you use both connections at once you create a
bridge around the firewall that protects you and
everyone else behind your firewall.  So from a
security point of view, I wouldn't do it.  The chances
that something bad might happen to you from your
bridge is limited, but you might affect your neighbors
indirectly.
