iPhoto and Nikon RAW .NEF files

I have a Nikon Coolpix 5700 camera and iPhoto 6 under 10.4.6.   I  
take photos in RAW format which I peel off the Compact Flash card via  
a  reader and then process in Photoshop CS2.  iPhoto 6 lists my  
camera as compatible, likewise my Flash Card Reader.  The raw files  
are in Nikon .NEF format and open correctly in Photoshop.
However in Image Capture or iPhoto 6 they will not read.  In both  
cases they are "seen" correctly but on importing come up with an  
error message that they could not be imported.  This happens either  
plugged into the camera directly,  the Flash Card in the reader of  
for downloaded files on my hard disk.
Has anyone any help to offer on this one please.  It would be so nice  
to file the raw photos straight into iPhoto.
