Mail email on another client

My wife has been secretary of an organisation and has saved about 
three years  worth of emails.  Another person is taking over her role 
and wants to keep and read those emails on a PC with a different 
email client. If she burns them all to CD will other email clients be 
able to read them?     She doesn't want to have to convert them all 
to Word documents.
