There is no fool like an old fool.
In my enthusiasm to do something special with the DV camera clips of my grandchildren that my son sent me I tried to import them into iMovie from the CD. They wouldn't behave. Didn't think to drop the files on my HD and then import until yesterday afternoon - and then as you say, iMovie will import .mov directly.
Thank you for your forbearance and thank you to others who made suggestions.

I am a novice with respect to formats and as DV per se is not listed will iMovie read one of alternatives listed in this part of the product description?

Is QT Pro the only way to convert mov clips from digital cameras to dv to import to iMovie? No cheaper but effective way?
