Rosemary, thanks for explaining what pps and ppt are all about. In
this case I have received a ppt file and cannot get it to open. It
starts to open and there are a few moments when it says it is
creating a metafile and then the application quits. If I could get
the file saved as a pps might it then work? It opens on a PC in
Windows 2000. What would I tell my friend who can do that to get it
saved as a pps file? Clearly, power point is not an application I
have used for creating documents.

No,
pps just means PowerPoint Show.,..meant to be looked at, but not
edited. Usually if you change the extension to ppt it works.
PPS files open directly into PowerPoint's slide show player, while
PPT files open in the PowerPoint editor. Most finalized
presentations are saved as PPS files so people viewing them don't
have to go through any extra steps to view the presentation as it
was intended.

The presentation's name has a suffix of .ppt.
Looking at other PP presentations that I have received and
successfully opened I notice the suffix is .pps
Have I encountered a feral file?
