Files go nicely in the Dock, on the right hand side, next to the
Trash Can.
Alternatively files and folders can be kept in full view in the
sidebar, way better than icons in Windows.
Spotlight is lightning fast for files you can not remember the
location of.
Remember too that many applications now have an "Open Recent" or
similar in the file menu.
The other piece of software that is great for keeping track of stuff
is Default Folder.
These more than duplicate what was available on pre OSX systems.

The Apple menu on Classical macs could be used for listing the
files commonly used, but apparently no longer. On the other hand
the Dock isn't very good for this.
Icons on the desktop could be used but they don't line up on the
left hand, like Windows one do. Is there any way of either using
the Apple menu for files, or of lining up icons on the left side of
the Desktop (or even better to view them as Lists?
