I have just read through your mails and not knowing .mac I am not
sure what it is that gives you that message
.... cannot find server .... .
This URL gets me to the login page using Safari :

DO YOU get that far ??
Next question: You have tried all that you could think of but
have you cleared ALL cookies ?
Browser preferences .... Privacy ( or security) .... cookies ....
clear cookies
or you might need to view cookies before you get the option to clear
cookies

However, Mail app can retrieve my mail at my Westnet account and
also send
mail from there.
Q2. No. And I agree that Port 143 is somehow blocked. (One question
though:
Does the Web browsers - Safari, Firefox or IE use Port 143 to
access the
site www.mac.com?)
Q3. No. I told you your questions are not silly!! I never did this
because I
find it more convenient to read my mail directly on the Websites
they are
hosted, ie Yahoo at Yahoo.fr site, .mac at the .Mac web site etc.
This is
convenient for when I travel and can still read my mail when other
servers
are down. (I am paranoid in loosing contact .... Sorry)
I agree that something is blocking Port 143, but I do not know
what. I have
not installed any applications lately, and my problems only started
after
the last security update from Apple's Software Update.
By the way this is Apple's suggestion:

may have affected your account on December 9th, and our services are
currently functioning normally. Since you are still experiencing an
issue
accessing <http://www.mac.com/>, your Internet Service Provider
(ISP) may
have a cache. To test this, enter the URL with a question mark at
the end,
like this:
<http://www.mac.com/?>
This will make the ISP's servers think that the page has dynamic
content,
and their cache will be bypassed. If your page then displays
correctly, you
might ask your ISP if mac.com pages can be excluded from their
cache, and
always loaded fresh.

I did try this but it did not work.
Sorry about being so lengthy and possibly boring lots of people.
But for me
I do appreciate all the help and suggestions received recently from

If all the above are 'Yes' .... then something is blocking Port 143
'Incoming' traffic.
A) Have you installed anything at around the time that this problem
started that could be blocking Port 143?
Little Snitch or something similar?
B) Can you access your ADSL Modem & see if there is a setting
'Incoming Port Range'
and see if the range includes Port 143?

By the way, I was at my brother's place and was able to open
my .mac account
without the slightest hiccup!! Now, that's frustrating ....
