Hi Jon,

The larger of the two connectors for SATA drives is the power connector and you are correct in saying that it is near on impossible to replace in a G5 without exchanging the case!! I have however seen and installed an internal drive bay expansion module for a G5 (allows an extra 3 internal drives) and with this kit comes a Y type adapter that plugs on to the power cable for the optical drive and splits to 2 power connectors one of which is used for the optical drive and the other which is free and allows the connection of another cable which supplies power to the SATA drives. I am sure that it would be possible to find this both the Y type power cable splitter and also the connector for converting this connection to a SATA type power connector. (should be available at most computer electronics shops). This should allow you to keep your drive in it's normal space in the G5 and just be powered by a different cable.

Hope that helps!

Regards,

Dustin.

Hi everyone. I have little glitch that has become a pain.

I have a corrupt HD drive cable connector on my G5, where it attaches to my 120Gb Western Digital drive. I run a 1.6GHz / 1.5Gb / 80GbHD plus a 120GbHD. The copper terminals on the cable for some reason are all bent!. Unfortunately it is the larger of the two drive cable connectors, and it appears that on my model these are non-replaceable parts, only the smaller of the two connectors are replaceable. So I am just wondering what my options are here?

Does this mean my 120Gb drive can only work if I get an external case with a Firewire connection? or is there another way around the problem? If the former, does anyone have a second hand case I can buy? otherwise does anyone have a spare HD connection cable from a broken G5. I know it is almost impossible to thread the cable through under the grey plastic drive housing, without removing it, so I guess that I can secure the drive in the G5 case somewhere else? is this possible?

I use my 80Gb for all system files, web files etc, and the 120Gb for all my work files and teaching. So the 120Gb is important, and I just don't want to have to pay around $200 just for a case to house the drive. So if there are any alternatives I would be very grateful for your suggestions.

Thanks in advance
Jon
