Right click or control click on the mail icon in the dock and uncheck
'open at login'. You probably accidentally selected this once while
opening the program.

Dear WAMUGGERS
I feel exceedingly stupid about this. I have been through both Mail
and System Preferences several times looking for where or how I stop
this from happening.
I will be very grateful to whoever can tell me how to stop it happening.
