Hi Mark,
Perhaps you can check whether the 'boot-volume' parameter is correctly
set? I believe that a value of 0 is loudest. A 'typical value' is 3.
Also, before changing anything, check your firmware to be sure that
'boot-volume' doesn't refer to a disk ("volume")!
E.g., on the command line:
nvram -p|grep boot-volume
boot-volume 0
sudo nvram boot-volume=3
I guess there would be GUI tools for this, too. We can guess that it
should be following your Sound preferences, but I don't know what
would cause that to break down.
