Hi Glenn,

I doubt this is relevant, however I used to have the same problem in Windows
XP which turned out to be that the mic port was configured for use as a
subwoofer port. Once I disabled the subwoofer option then the mic worked as
per normal.

I have never owned anything other than an iBook and MacBook so I don't know
what the ports are like on the iMac, but is it possible that the audio is
setup for surround sound?
