Yes James, there is a lot of difference in their input levels. The internal mic registers well at 50% input volume, and records normally. The external mic doesn't register with normal voice, but will register a loud voice. I can record with the external mic via the line in, but the level is almost inaudible, even with input volume right up to 100% in sound prefs.

With Garage Band the external mic gets much better sound levels for voice - at 100% input level, a voice track is usable (although not loud). If I switch to the Audio In app and record (with input level at 100%), voice is barely audible. Definitely there, but barely audible.
