Here's hoping Apple succeeds in bringing Hi-Def movies to the iTunes store with reasonable Fairplay DRM allowing us to bypass the whole sorry next-gen DVD mess altogether. (about the only thing I wouldn't mind a Blu-ray drive for is the 50GB capacity of dual- layer BD discs for data storage.)
Personally, I won't be purchasing either Blue-Ray or HD-DVD as it's just a waste of money.
Movie studios seem to think that they will lose so much money if the DRM gets cracked. Regular DVD's have been cracked for ages, yet the studios still seem to be making money. Perhaps if they just provided a decent product at reasonable prices (SHOCK HORROR) they might be surprised.
Normally you expect the cheap knock-off's to be crappy. As it stands, the pirated copy is a better, more usable product than the legitimate one.
Leading by example, I can faithfully say that Blue-Ray and HD-DVD are complete waste of money. I won't be adding any Hi Def discs to my DVD collection.
