Hi Wamuggians

I have a problem that happens randomly. Every now and then the desk top items go haywire and the majority of them lob on top of the HD icon while some of the others go elsewhere. I think that this may be happening when a file (Usually pdf) is being downloaded from the internet. When I go to Finder/View, Snap to Grid is selected. I am using a G4 iMac OS 10.3.9. Can anyone explain this phenomenon and what I can do to prevent it happening again

Wishing all of you and your families a great New Year with good health, happiness & prosperity.

Cheers, Alex

How many items do you have on your desktop? They really should be kept to a minimum (a discipline that few of are able to follow rigorously, myself included). A couple of things to try:

1. Designate some other folder on your hard drive as your Downloads folder (Leopard solves this, but with a little TOO much discipline) 2. Keep items on the desktop organised in some sort of "Arrange by" order. I find "kind" works best for me. 3. Try to regularly cull or re-locate Desktop icons on a regular basis (the hard part).

The lesson was well and truly drummed home to me on a client's eMac. He was complaining that the computer was running so slowly it was almost unusable. I found that problem was that he had over 800 (!) icons piled up on top of his Hard Drive icon on the Desktop. Mac OS X uses (for some reason) a huge number of processor cycles trying to draw icons in this way. Once I showed the client how to view his Desktop icons in List view he was able to start implementing a more sensible management system. It took a long time to sort out, though, with all the drawing and re-drawing.
