Mac OS X uses (for some reason) a huge number of processor cycles trying to draw icons in this way. Once I showed the client how to view his Desktop icons in List view he was able to start implementing a more sensible management system. It took a long time to sort out, though, with all the drawing and re-drawing.
Not to mention what happens when you accidentally select all on the desktop and then double click on one of them! Yes, from experience, they all open simultaneously, or at least attempt to
