In the absence of see what you're doing, I have to ask: are you
holding down cmd-V until the UNIX text appears, or simply holding and
releasing immediately?
If, after holding down cmd-V for up to 30 seconds or so the UNIX test
has not appeared, try booting from your Leopard DVD and repairing
permissions and/or the drive itself.
