Thanks for all the advice, as it turns out I eventually got it to
mount again via Target Mode and recover all the data from there I did
a full install of Tiger and it has been behaving itself for the 2
days. It appears that repetitive power outages were the root cause of
the problem.

Try an Apple service center.
But before you do if you do need to recover files off of it download
the demo version of Data Rescue X (link in my previous post) to see
if that will mount the disk, I had a couple of external (Firewire)
drives that were failing to mount but Data Rescue X II was able to
recover almost all the data off of.
if it does mount the disk and after inspection (try the quick option
first as the full scan can take several hours to a couple of days
on large disks) it shows files that can be recovered then you can
buy it over the net - it's about $102 AUD at current exchange
rates. and always a very handy tool to have at the ready. I have it
installed on both my macs and it's been a "life saver" for both my
self and my families macs several times.

Thanks for the information all. It looks like the HD has failed as
I can't even get at the HD in target mode and it and can no longer
see it to Archive & Install.
Any suggestions where the best place to go and get it sorted is.

My daughters iMac G3 (15" flat screen) won't start, it gets the
grey apple screen with the progressive rotary wheel but goes no
further. I have accessed it via Target mode and retrieved her
documents etc, but am having trouble rectifying the problem. I
tried correcting permissions via target mode and got an error
message: Invalid Node Structure. I then tried TechTools which
stalled at step 12 (of some two and a half million steps) so tried
DiskWorrior which says "Speed is inhibited by disk malfunction" at
step 5 "Locating Directory Data.
Can anyone please advise me if there is any point persisting with
WiskWorrior or TechTools and or will an archive and install cure it.
