Thanks Bob, I had already more or less decided on one or other of
those options, both are available to me as I have plenty drives. I
plan to do a normal Clean Install from the DVD to the external drive.
I will clone my current system to a third drive using SuperDuper then
erase and clone back again to my normal working hard drive when
everything is running. What a sweat and waste of time! Thanks for
the tip on 10.5.2
Thanks for your interest.

Sounds like an OSX new instal would help "
You have 2 choices
1. You can instal Leopard on a Firewire external drive boot from
the external drive and try your printer from there
or
2. If you don't have a suitable drive you would need to do an
Archive and Instal on your main drive and try out from there .
Do not bring in your old user data until you have tried out the
printer .
I would recommend you try it on OS X 10.5.2 which is a version
which seems to have minimal problems.
If you can use option 1 , I am sending instructions that will help
you set up the installation to instal on the external drive

My long running issue with printing from a new Epson R2880 is sort
of resolved. G5 1.8 OSX10.5.4
Following advice I first reinstalled the 10.5.4 combo update in
safe boot mode.
I can now make it work by booting in safe mode, uninstalling the
driver then reinstalling. CUPS can be accessed.
Any return to normal boot corrupts something and I have to go
through the whole sequence again. The printer either pauses or
comes up with "Sending Data" forever depending on actions history.
Returning to safe boot from this state leaves the driver corrupted.
Currently I have nothing at all in my login items, all cleared
out. Two other printers, one into USB and the other into Airport
Extreme are unaffected by all this.
I notice no other weird happenings suggesting a wider issue and
Epson confirm that they are aware of no issue with 10.5.4. The CD
installed the software straight on to my MacBook (Tiger) which
prints without a hitch. The driver on the CD is the same as the
one posted on the internet.
What do I do next. Do I need something like a clean install and
rebuild? Horror!
Lifeline welcomed at this stage
