Neil, I tried the firmware using both Firefox and hardwiring Mac to
router, and it worked. So I don't know whether it was Firefox or
ethernet that fixed it, but I no longer care :-)
Thanks for the ideas.
Still no luck extending the network with the Time Capsule though. We
shall persist.

direct
experience with this router.
