Hi Ian I'd be hesitant to suggest taking it to a repairer without giving them a call first. Most places would charge you before looking at it, as they have a "standard" quoting fee these days, and some of them can be at least $75-$100 just to look at it. If you then consider that you can get a new scanner for around $150, it's sometimes not worth it. Not saying that's always the case, just something to consider.
ServiceWest are a repairer for anything Epson, so may pay to give them a call tomorrow and see what they say - 9474 4990. Hope that helps a bit.
