Hi Graeme, Paul, Peta & Rob have given correct and useful information in their replies. I will only try to explain Events for you in my reply.
In the Events Preference Pane in iPhoto > Preferences - Events - "Autosplit into Events" 'One event per day', 'One event per week' , Two-hour' or 'Eight-hour' gaps. iPhoto 09 (like its predecessor) automatically splits imported photos into Events based on the capture date of the photos. Usually this is very handy, but sometimes events can be split when it would be better to have them together. You can "combine" events by selecting them, then click the Merge button on the bottom toolbar. Or you can drag one Event onto another to merge the two Events. The result is a single Event. You can rename the Events, by clicking on the title field under the thumbnail. You can move photos between events, drag photos from one event to another in Photos view. You can Split Events, either by: 1. When you’re importing new photos, check Autosplit Events after Importing. 2. In Events view, select one or more events and choose Autosplit Selected Events from the Events menu. or 3. When viewing an event’s photos, select one or more photos and click the Split button.
