Hi Lloyd -- -- It might just be that you have hit a bad patch in the Verbatim production line. I had a similar problem with a batch of Sony DVD+Rs. I even sent one which was clearly faulty back to Sony, they denied there was anything wrong with it. I now use TDK Gold DVD+R discs, they are a bit more expensive, but have had no problems since (maybe 800 discs used).
