Yes, you should be able to do that. It¹s a relatively new feature for the
iMac (from late 2009 model) so yours should be fine ­  from the Apple site:

You can use your iMac as a display, via the Mini DisplayPort:

You have to put the iMac into ³Target Display² mode, this article gives some

and has this to say about the cable you need:

You should be able to use it as either a mirror of the Macbook Pro screen or
as a second (extended desktop) monitor ­ depending on how you set the
Macbook Pro.

I think this is a great feature ­ I imagine a few buyers might decide just
to get an iMac rather than an Apple display ­ for a bit more money you get,
in effect, a spare computer thrown in ;o)
