Thanks Neil David & Paul
The answer is Yes you can connect the new 27 inch iMac (late 2009 onwards) to a macbook to use the iMac as a second monitor.
All you need is a Mini Display Port male to male cable ($29 i think)
Then you can utilise programs such as Aperture and Final Cut which allow for a second monitor.
It's REALLY useful in Aperture to have your browser and Inspector HUD open on the macbook and then the imac as a secondary display shower a full screen view of the photo.

The day Microsoft makes something that doesn't suck
is probably the day they start making vacuum cleaners

Hi Rod,

Yes, you should be able to do that. It’s a relatively new feature for the iMac (from late 2009 model) so yours should be fine –  from the Apple site:

<http://www.apple.com/au/imac/features.html>

You can use your iMac as a display, via the Mini DisplayPort:

Mini DisplayPort.

The Mini DisplayPort lets you connect an external display, including the Apple LED Cinema Display, to your iMac. On the 27-inch iMac, the same port offers input, too. So you can connect any external source that has DisplayPort output — including a MacBook or MacBook Pro — and use your iMac as a display.

You have to put the iMac into “Target Display” mode, this article gives some more detail:

<http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3924>

and has this to say about the cable you need:

Note:  Target Display mode requires a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable, such as the Belkin Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable, which is sold separately at the Apple Store as part number TX706VC/A.

You should be able to use it as either a mirror of the Macbook Pro screen or as a second (extended desktop) monitor – depending on how you set the Macbook Pro.

I think this is a great feature – I imagine a few buyers might decide just to get an iMac rather than an Apple display – for a bit more money you get, in effect, a spare computer thrown in ;o)

Cheers
