Brian, I think there is something in the setting up sequence of
Airport Extreme but I do not recall where. I set this up though I am
not currently using it.

Thank you Severin
Yes TimeMachine is handled by a separate LAN cabled HD via AirPort
Extreme,
the trial HD I connected to the usb port hasn't shown up so I will
have to look for a setting somewhere...

Yes, it is a good feature of an Airport Extreme. It should be noted
that although you can share multiple drives this way through a hub
you can not make one of those drives a Time Machine drive and
effectively convert to a Time Capsule. A minor drawback

Hi WAMUGers
Looking to network USB HDs and the answer was under my nose all the
time I looked up Airport BaseStation Extreme in the Apple Store and :
The AirPort Extreme supports up to four USB devices connected
through a powered USB hub (it has it's own power cable).
Share your hard drive.
You can share an external USB hard drive over your wireless and
wired networks by simply connecting it to the USB port on your
AirPort Extreme Base Station.
Called AirPort Disk, this feature is perfect for sharing files and
more.
