Hi WAMUG, Yes I have upgraded to iLife'11 and then I remembered seeing this warning. 'back up Photo library - there are issues.'
This warning via 9 to 5 Mac http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2621805&start=0&tstart=0 Disc Utility had to verify and 'fix' the external storage HD then I eventually found my 50Gb of Library in folder named IMPORTS - so I have reimported it all as iPhoto only shows grey boxes where the photos should be. After reimporting and sorting by date it is still a real mess.
