No this is not a hoax, this is very real.

If you have GPS enabled and the posting process you use embeds the location in
its EXIF then yes this information will be posted. And as we all know with
sites like FaceBook there is, really, no such thing as true, effective,
privacy of data posted there.

You might find that what ever service you post your image up to will by default
strip the EXIF data out or minimalise it (like with pBase's images) or it may
be that the program you use to upload does much the same (ie lightroom has a
"minimalise EXIF" option on its export and upload functions).

One thing to note is that different GPS/Cameras work differently indoors. As
GPS satellite signals can't penetrate very well once you walk indoors (or
even under heavy tree cover (and in fact even sometimes under really heavy
cloud cover)) your GPS loses the signal. Some cameras just continue to tag all
the images you took as being at the last known GPS lock, other cameras will tag
the location as "unknown".

Personally I think this is a very useful function but something that should be
disabled by default.
I shoot with DSLR's which are, both fortunately and unfortunately, at this
point built in GPS free so to gain this function I need to carry a separate GPS
unit and then link the time data on the image to the time/location data on the
GPS's log. But I certainly would not want this function by default and as yet
have not used this with any uploaded images.

I tried what they say in this clip on photos taken on my iPhone but cant get
the same result. Is it possible or is it a hoax?
