Bill,

Have you emptied Mail's Trash with the Mailbox>Erase Deleted Items menu item?

Also, make sure you have done the following:

1 Click once on the offending mailbox to highlight it.
2 Use the Mailbox>Rebuild menu item to rebuild that mailbox.
3 Do the same with all other mailboxes

Then check if the offending items are persisting.

If they persist then delete one or two, empty Mail's Trash and see if you now
have better luck.

If that fails then:

1 in the bottom right-hand corner of the mailboxes window use the gearwheel to
choose Get Account Info
2 Choose the offending account
3 Choose the offending emails, if they are still with your mail provider.
4 Click on the Delete From Server button.
5 Keep fingers crossed.
