Since you know that the xml file has come from a database, this gives us a pretty good insight int show the xml file will be structured, and it should show meaningful data when imported int any modern version of M$ Excel. Failing that, try opening it with Filemaker Pro (if you don't have a copy, a fully-functional 30-day trial can be downloaded from http://www.filemaker.com.au). Filemaker will convert the xml file to a native Filemaker Pro database, giving you all the organisational power you need to analyse the data, or you can export the data back out to an xlsx file, which WILL work with Excel 2011 or Numbers, or you can export to a tab-or comma-delimited text file for use in myriad other list managers. You'll probably want to do these things anyway, since your Filemaker Trial will stop working after 30 days...
