Hi Adrian,

Had to rush out after sending my previous reply. 
I don’t know if you can stop the process. You ‘might’ be able to Cancel or 
Force Quit the current deletion process that's currently going on.

Apple Menu > Force Quit

Or use Activity Monitor to to Quit the Process.
